English: Comparison of historical versions of Morse code with the current standard. Original version by Morse (American Morse Code or Railroad Code), version by Gerke (Continental Morse Code) and the ITU standard.
This chart is based on the table in,
Anton A. Huurdeman, The worldwide history of telecommunications, p.144, Wiley-IEEE, 2003 ISBN0471205052.
A number of errors have been corrected. Huurdeman has "P" as . . . . in American Morse (which should be . . . . .) and "Z" as . - - .. in Gerke's code (which should be . — — .., Gerke did not use short dashes). These corrections have been verified correct by consulting
R. W. Burns, Communications: an international history of the formative years, p.77, Institution of Electrical Engineers, 2004 ISBN0863413277.
6 October 2019: A further error corrected is that the original Gerke did not distinguish between "I" and "J". This is how the code is shown in Burns and Gerke's own Der praktische Telegraphist on page 126. There is no entry for "I".
