ASX Accident Report

On Saturday, 31 May 2025, a privately operated Beechcraft B36TC Bonanza, registration D-EHVM, departed from Alkersleben/Wülfershausen Airfield (EDBA) in Thuringia, Germany, en route to Düsseldorf-Mönchengladbach Airport (MGL/EDLN). The aircraft was being flown by a 71-year-old female pilot who was the sole occupant. The aircraft, a 1987 model with a Continental TSIO-520-UB engine and RAM modification, was observed operating normally until its final approach into Mönchengladbach when a critical failure occurred. At approximately 12:01 local time, while approaching runway 31 and approximately 4.5 kilometers from the airport, the aircraft experienced engine failure.

Following the engine failure, the pilot attempted to glide the aircraft toward the airfield but was unable to maintain altitude. A distress call was transmitted as the aircraft passed over Kleinenbroich, a residential area within Korschenbroich, North Rhine-Westphalia. Witnesses and ADS-B flight tracking data confirm that the aircraft lost height rapidly and ultimately descended onto the rear terrace of a residential building. The aircraft impacted the home, igniting a fire upon collision. Emergency responders, including police, fire, and technical rescue teams, quickly responded to the scene.

The accident resulted in the deaths of both the pilot and an 84-year-old female resident of the home. Her husband, who was also in the house at the time, managed to escape with no physical injuries. The family’s dog, a dachshund, also perished in the impact. The structure sustained severe fire and impact damage, prompting structural support actions by the Technical Relief Organization (THW) to prevent collapse. According to local officials, the METAR at the time reported clear visibility and calm winds, suggesting that weather did not contribute to the accident.

Preliminary indications suggest that the probable cause of the accident was the loss of engine power on approach. The investigation is ongoing, with aviation safety authorities and accident investigators examining the aircraft’s mechanical condition, pilot communications, and recovered flight data. No evidence of intentional action or midair collision has been reported. The aircraft was completely destroyed, and the full reconstruction of events is dependent on forensic examination of the wreckage and site.
