ASX Accident Report

On Friday, June 6, 2025, a Morane-Saulnier MS.733 Alcyon (registration F-AZXU) crashed near the end of the runway at Rochefort Saint-Agnant Airport (RCO/LFDN) in Charente-Maritime, France. The aircraft, a vintage French military trainer from the 1950s, was being flown by a 53-year-old retired French Air Force pilot during an authorized demonstration flight. This event took place as part of a ceremonial graduation (baptême de promotion) for cadets at Base Aérienne 721. The aircraft was privately owned and operated and had taken off from the same airport. There were no other persons onboard or harmed on the ground.

The flight was in the maneuvering phase at the time of the accident, reportedly attempting a go-around maneuver. According to witnesses and preliminary reports, the aircraft was seen executing a steep climbing turn at approximately 300 meters altitude when it suddenly entered an aerodynamic stall and descended rapidly. The aircraft impacted terrain in a nearby field at a location known as La Grollière, just beyond the runway threshold. Emergency response teams from the local fire service (SDIS 17), medical responders (SMUR), and the gendarmerie secured the site quickly. The pilot was declared deceased at the scene, and the aircraft was completely destroyed upon impact.

Initial investigation data indicate that the probable cause may be linked to loss of control during a steep, low-altitude maneuver. The Bureau d’Enquêtes et d’Analyses (BEA), the Gendarmerie des Transports Aériens (BGTA), and the Rochefort police are leading the inquiry to determine contributing factors such as pilot decision-making, aircraft condition, and possible physiological variables. An autopsy was ordered to support the investigation. No mechanical failure has been publicly confirmed at this time, and full investigative results are pending further analysis by authorities.
