ASX Accident Report

On June 23, 2025, a Murphy Moose registered as N250MK departed from Montrose Regional Airport (KMTJ) in Montrose County, Colorado, before crashing approximately six miles west of the field. The aircraft, a high-wing utility kit plane known for its short takeoff capability and rugged build, was operated by a private pilot identified in local reports. The aircraft impacted terrain in rugged foothill country, resulting in the fatalities of both occupants. The FAA confirmed the aircraft type and registration, and emergency response was coordinated by Montrose County authorities following a report from a civilian who discovered the wreckage. Recovery operations were carried out by local fire and rescue teams with assistance from sheriff’s deputies.

The crash site was located in an area of variable terrain near Dave Wood Road, an undeveloped region with elevations and scrubland that complicate both flight and rescue operations. Preliminary observations indicated that the aircraft may have entered a descent shortly after takeoff before impacting the ground in a nose-low attitude. There was no evidence of in-flight fire was observed. Weather data from the morning of the crash did not indicate significant meteorological hazards, and the FAA database did not show any active Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) in the area at the time. The aircraft was a homebuilt Murphy Moose equipped with a radial engine, a configuration noted for its powerful performance but demanding handling characteristics. Audio from air traffic control and transcripts of local scanner traffic confirm that no distress call was made.
