ASX Accident Report
On the morning of Saturday, April 19, 2025, a Cessna 180G Skywagon registered as N4679U crashed along County Road 1400 North near Trilla, Illinois, located between Coles and Cumberland counties, approximately three miles south of Mattoon and southwest of Coles County Memorial Airport. Authorities received reports of the crash around 10:15 a.m. The single-engine aircraft carried four occupants, two men and two women, all of whom were confirmed to be from Menomonie, Wisconsin. The victims were pronounced dead at the scene by local authorities. The Coles County Coroner, Illinois State Police, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) initiated a coordinated investigation.
Eyewitness accounts, including that of a nearby resident, reported that the aircraft was observed in a shattered condition on the roadway, with debris scattered across County Road 1400N. One witness recounted hearing a sputtering noise prior to the crash and observed parts of the wreckage, including a wing. There was confirmation that the aircraft struck power lines during its descent, leading to damage that affected the local electrical grid. Power outages were reported in nearby Trilla, with approximately 80 Ameren Illinois customers affected, although service was restored later that day.
According to Illinois State Police and follow-up reports from WCIA, the aircraft remained at the crash site through Sunday morning. Authorities indicated that the wreckage would be transported to a secure facility for further analysis by the NTSB. Investigators planned to examine flight tracking data, pilot background and experience, maintenance records, potential electronic devices on board, and any air traffic control communications. Weather and lighting conditions, as well as any surveillance footage and witness statements, were also included in the data gathering process.
