ASX Accident Report

At about 09:45 local time on 28 June 2025, a privately-owned single-engine Zlin Z-142 (registration RA-2981G) crashed into an open field just south-east of Novonezhino Airfield (XHWN) in Primorsky Krai, Russia. The aeroplane was on a local training sortie that both departed from and was intended to return to Novonezhino. It was destroyed on impact and the sole occupant - a 56-year-old male pilot - suffered fatal injuries.

Registry data show the aircraft held Russian registration-certificate 2991 (issued 28 December 2018) and an air-worthiness certificate (№ 2032210062) valid from 23 November 2021 under the oversight of the Far Eastern branch of Rosaviatsiya. According to field reports released by the Far Eastern Transport Prosecutor’s Office and local media channels, the pilot - an inexperienced pilot and resident of nearby Artyom - had long aspired to fly and persuaded the owner to let him conduct his first independent flight for basic handling practice. Shortly after liftoff the aeroplane descended uncontrolled and came to rest inverted in grassland approximately one kilometer from the runway; there were no passengers or ground casualties.

Preliminary investigative statements indicate that loss of control during initial climb, compounded by the pilot’s minimal flight experience, is the leading scenario under review. The Investigative Committee of Russia has opened a criminal case under Article 263 (2) for suspected violations of air-transport safety rules resulting in death, while the Far Eastern Transport Prosecutor’s Office is conducting a parallel compliance audit of flight-safety regulations. Weather, technical failure and operational decision-making are being examined, but no mechanical anomalies have yet been confirmed.
