(DCT) Direct
DCT stands for Direct, and refers to a navigation function within flight management systems (FMS) that allows pilots to proceed directly to a selected waypoint—bypassing intervening waypoints or established airways.
This capability is commonly used to:
- Shorten route distances
- Save fuel
- Reduce flight time
- Simplify reroutes during in-flight ATC instructions
When filing flight plans, "DCT" is inserted between waypoints to indicate direct routing. For example:
FLACK DCT IRW DCT IRW12503 4020N07205W DCT MONEY
This shows the aircraft will fly directly from FLACK to IRW, then on to specified coordinates, and finally to MONEY.
While "DCT" routings improve efficiency, they are subject to approval by air traffic control and must comply with airspace structure and restrictions.
