Typical GA Oil Pressure Gauge

An aircraft oil pressure gauge is an instrument that displays the pressure of the lubricating oil supplied by the engine's oil pump, ensuring the engine receives adequate lubrication and alerting pilots to potential issues.

Function

The primary function of an oil pressure gauge is to indicate the pressure of the oil circulating through the engine, which is crucial for proper lubrication of moving parts.

Units

Oil pressure is typically displayed in pounds per square inch (psi).

Normal Operating Range

The gauge usually has a green arc indicating the normal operating range, with caution and limit ranges marked in yellow and red, respectively.

Importance

Monitoring oil pressure is essential for engine health and safety, as low or fluctuating oil pressure can indicate problems like oil pump failure, leaks, or low oil levels.

How it works

The gauge is connected to a pressure-sensing mechanism, such as a Bourdon tube, which expands or contracts in response to changes in oil pressure, and this movement is then translated into a needle movement on the gauge.

What to do

If you notice fluctuating or low oil pressure, reduce power and plan for a landing as soon as possible.

Other gauges

Oil temperature and oil pressure gauges are two of the most important engine instruments.
